From MVDDC Chair Maritza Zermeno:
We are about to say goodbye to 2019, a year marked by the most farm foreclosures since the Great Depression, children taken from their parents at the border in our name, an administration suing to eliminate the Affordable Care Act and all its protections, the Amazon burning, North Korea talks disintegrating, 5,000 Muslims arrested in Kashmir as nationalism takes hold in India, the U.S. abandoning its Kurdish allies, hate crimes peaked, gun violence reached new heights, pro-democracy protests taking root all over the world; and yes, Trump becoming the 3rd president to be impeached.
As we make resolutions for the New Year, let’s focus on the issues that we really care about. The next year will include an impeachment trial in the Senate, a federal election, and a census. And the year after includes picking a new governor, attorney general, and majorities in both state houses. Most important, Virginia will reapportion its districts in 2021 based on the 2020 census.
The top priority for most of us is to remove Trump, but we have much more to do. We need to educate our members, our volunteers, and the voters.
My passions are the issues of immigration and voter registration. I have invited two speakers to our first meeting in January. These are real people; our neighbors. They will try to help us understand the fear of being deported to a country they have never known just because they were brought to the U.S. as a child, and what a family goes through when the father is not coming home because he has been deported. We encourage you to invite your family, friends, and neighbors to our January meeting.
Please let us know about your passions so that we can schedule events to educate ourselves and become more involved through the year.
Mark your calendar with some of the events coming up on our events page at www.mvdemocrats.com/events.
We end 2019 remembering those who have left us and hoping for a better future. Let’s have a great 2020 and make the difference!
